Nuclear Material Not Found on Aircraft Crashed by Highway, Despite Reports

No nuclear material was present on a military aircraft at the time of its crash in Southern California.

Reports earlier in the day indicated that nuclear material may have been onboard the aircraft but a post on the Naval Air Facility El Centro Facebook page said those reports were incorrect.

The crash happened Wednesday afternoon in Imperial County, California, according to local CBS affiliate KYMA.

The post went on to state that the aircraft belonged to “3d Marine Aircraft Wing.”

An earlier post on the Naval Air Facility El Centro Facebook page from around 4:30 p.m. ET mentioned reports of “a downed aircraft in the vicinity of Coachella Canal Road and 78.”

The post went on to state that crews from the Imperial County Fire Department as well as Installation Federal Fire were on their way to the scene.

A Twitter post from Mike Valerio, a CNN Newsource correspondent, which cited a Marine spokesman, said there were five people aboard the military aircraft.

It is unclear at this time what may have led to the crash. There has been no confirmation of any fatalities or injuries.

Newsweek reached out to the Imperial County Fire Department for comment.
