When New York-based Josh Wardle released his word-based brainteaser, Wordle, to the public in October 2021, he never imagined he had created a global sensation.
Far from it, with the software engineer, originally from the U.K., telling Newsweek his initial aim was merely to “make a game that my partner would enjoy playing.”
Wordle players are tasked with guessing a five-letter mystery word in a maximum of six guesses. After a guess, each letter lights up in either green, yellow or gray. Green means the letter is correct and in the right place, yellow shows the letter is correct but in the wrong place and gray denotes it’s not part of the answer at all.
In January, Wardle sold his puzzle to the New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum, though it remains free to play.

Speaking to Newsweek, Wardle explained how his game first took off in the tight-knit New Zealand Twitter community.
Wardle said: “For obvious reasons, Wordle has mostly been popular in English-speaking countries. After all, it is a language-based game. When it launched, it actually took hold in New Zealand first…which is something I’ve never experienced before.
“The Twittersphere over there is quite small, so everyone tends to be rather interconnected. That means that if one person shares something, a lot of others are likely to see it as well, which is how Wordle gained such momentum.”
Wordle has inspired a range of other popular online brainteasers including Quordle, Worldle, Dordle and the math-focused Nerdle.

Wordle players can use the following five hints to solve puzzle #445.
- Hint #1: Today’s Wordle contains two vowels.
- Hint #2: One letter is repeated twice.
- Hint #3: Synonyms for today’s word include “careful,” “cautious” and “distrustful.”
- Hint #4: The word includes one letter from the last three in the alphabet.
- Hint #5: Merriam-Webster defines today’s word as “suspicious, wary,” and it is “often used with of.”
‘Wordle’ #445 Answer for Wednesday, September 7
The answer to today’s Wordle is “Leery.”
Containing two of one of the more common vowels, today’s Wordle may not have been the most challenging puzzle the game has thrown our way, but it was certainly fun and got us thinking!
