Obscura Day is an Atlas Obscura tradition where the whole team takes a day off to explore—whether it’s a nearby hidden gem or a distant, wondrous site. Check out the places our team visited.

Not to be confused with the other much larger Grimsey Island, this tiny island off the coast of the Westfjords is one of the few places where you can go and hang directly with puffins. Inhabited for hundreds of years, the people here have always lived alongside these puffins. No one lives there now, but the ruins remain. Not a major tourist site, a visit is a chance to wander and climb this beautiful island all while watching the puffins go about their very cute business.
