Located in Agadir on Morocco's Atlantic coast, Souk El Had is one of Africa's largest urban markets. Spread across 13 acres with 13 unique sections, each with its own entrance, this vibrant market has everything from handmade goods to fresh fruits and vegetables to electronics.
Souk El Had was established in the Amsernat area of Agadir after the 1960 earthquake, which destroyed a large majority of the city and claimed over 10,000 lives. Souk El Had, meaning Sunday market, originally started off as a collection of tents but, over time, has been renovated with large buildings and a 20-foot (6-meter) tall surrounding wall. It can feel like a maze within the market, so finding your way can be difficult. But around every corner is a unique stall with its own surprise. It's best to take note of what entrance you enter through and walk around clockwise to easily find your exit when you've finished exploring the market.
Tour companies offer guided tours of the market, pointing out the best stalls and unique features of the building, but going on your own is fine.
