Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror in Les Escaldes, Andorra

Outside the village of Ramio

Nestled deep in the eastern Pyrenees mountains lies the Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror, a glacial valley renowned for its history and grandeur. At only 42.47 square kilometers (about 16 square miles), it is not very large, but still occupies nearly 10 percent of the tiny country of Andorra. Vall del Madriu-Perafita-Claror is considered to be the spiritual heart of Andorra, a place where natural beauty and cultural heritage come together.

Below the craggy ridge of the mountains, the valley holds a patchwork of alpine meadows, highland forests, and crystal lakes. Relatively isolated from humans, it is home to rare and endangered species, including the bearded vulture and Pyrenean chamois. In the springtime, snowmelt nourishes the fields, giving rise to rich grazing land and beautiful wildflowers.

In addition to its natural beauty, the valley also features man-made structures dating back to medieval times. Among these are the cherished bordas, the traditional stone huts of Andorra. While ancient, these dwellings are not abandoned. The settlements of Entremesaigües and Ramio, sharing twelve huts between them, still host small summertime populations of shepherds who bring their sheep and cattle to graze on the terraced fields. The land has been held communally by these local families since the Middle Ages. It was also home to some of the country’s first iron-working facilities.

In 2004, it was dedicated as the first (and to date, only) UNESCO World Heritage Site in Andorra. Instead of focusing on its value as a tourist attraction, Andorra has taken the preservation of the valley’s history and environment as its primary goal. Unused structures, including pasture walls and bordas, have been restored and fortified. Aside from a small parking area at the valley’s entrance, and a few interpretive signs along the trail, there are no great plans to make it more accessible to tourists. The cobblestone road that runs through the middle of the valley is reserved for foot traffic only, as it was for hundreds of years.
