Downtown Elmhurst, Illinois, is a bustling thoroughfare complete with coffee shops, restaurants, and a movie theater. Underneath one of those commercial buildings is the Elmhurst Model Railroad Club.
Started in 1969, the club had a number of homes before settling in its current space in 1986. The basement space is packed wall-to-wall with train sets depicting Midwest scenes. There are three different types of tracks in use. The 90-by-20-foot HO track is the largest. The tracks are maintained and updated by club members.
Though it is a member’s club, visitors are welcome on Friday evenings from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are able to get up close to the sets and the shorter ones will find ample foot stools to help them get a better look.
