Obscura Day Summer 2025: Panorama of the City of New York

Obscura Day is an Atlas Obscura tradition where the whole team takes a day off to explore—whether it’s a nearby hidden gem or a distant, wondrous site. Check out the places our team visited.

I had to be in Queens for a Mets game so I decided to show up early to Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the site of the famous World’s Fairs in 1939 and 1964. Following the Atlas, I ventured inside the Queens Museum to check out the spectacularly detailed Panorama of the City of New York, built for the 1964 fair at a scale of one inch to 100 feet. Walking around the Panorama feels like you’re flying above New York, and it’s a wonderful tribute to the city, not in parts but as a magnificent whole.
